LAST LAYER, MOST POWER A winch’s capacity is rated at the last layer of rope on the drum. The more rope you wind onto the drum, the less pulling capacity you have. Whenever possible, get as much line out as possible, sometimes using a snatch block can help. However, always leave at least five wraps of wire rope or a full layer of synthetic rope on the drum.
